Maintenance and Care

Our products aren't always going to look like they do the day you bring them home. And that's a good thing. We love materials that develop and patina with use - we think you should too.

Give your gear the life it was built for by not worrying too much about nicks, scratches, gouges, and what have you. To prolong the life of our products though, consider some routine maintenance. 
Classic Leash

Cleaning

Wash the leash with fresh water and a small amount of dish soap. Rinse until the water runs clear, then hang it to dry. If your leash spends a lot of time in saltwater, giving it a quick freshwater rinse afterward will help preserve the wood - but it should hold up just fine if you skip this. The leash is designed to handle regular use around the ocean.

Maintenance

The only part of the leash that benefits from occasional maintenance is the mahogany handle. Over time, exposure to sun and saltwater may dry the wood slightly. When it begins to look dry, wipe on a very thin coat of oil and allow it to absorb into the wood. Curing oils are a particularly good choice as they will harden into a protective coating on the wood - some common curing oils you might have around are: 

  • Tung oil
  • Walnut oil
  • Linseed oil or boiled linseed oil

We finish every handle with a blend of walnut oil and beeswax, but any of the oils above will work well.

Standard Collar, Leather

Cleaning

Rinse away dirt with fresh water. Clean the leather with saddle soap if you have it, which is designed to clean while preserving the natural oils in the leather. If you don't have saddle soap, ordinary dish soap works perfectly well - just condition the leather afterward.

Maintenance

Leather naturally loses oils over time, especially after repeated exposure to saltwater. Every so
often, condition your leather with a light coat of oil. Apply sparingly - leather doesn't need to be fully saturated, and excessive oil can soften and weaken it over time.

Use whatever oil or leather conditioner is available to you, such as: 

  • Neatsfoot oil
  • Mink oil
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Lanolin
  • Any common leather cream/conditioner

Standard Collar, Biothane

Cleaning

Wash with fresh water and a small amount of dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and hang to dry.

Maintenance

Biothane is a synthetic product and doesn't need maintenance beyond occasional cleaning.

Baseball Cap

Cleaning

For routine cleaning, rinse with fresh water. If the hat needs a deeper cleaning, use fresh water and a mild detergent. Avoid aggressive machine washing or harsh drying cycles, which can shorten the life of both the fabric and the leather patch.

Maintenance

The leather patch is perfectly happy getting wet. If it eventually begins to look dry, apply a small amount of leather conditioner and allow it to absorb.
